The Scheldt Campaign

The Battle of the Scheldt was a series of operations to clear the shipping route to the Port of Antwerp. Although lesser known, the fighting there was fierce against a strong and well-established enemy. Clearing the area North of Antwerp, clearing the Breskens pocket, capturing South Beveland and finally capturing Walcheren.

Exploring all these former battlefields in Belgium and the southwest of The Netherlands is very much worth it. All small and big battles that took place are connected to each other and form a campaign that deserves to be discussed in every school, during lectures and on the fields.

We frequently travel to the areas where fighting took place. Every time we find new things and learn new stories. The area is of historical significance and is a must visit!

THE HIGH PRICE OF FREEDOM

Two large cemeteries in Bergen op Zoom in the Netherlands and one in Adegem in Belgium give you an idea about how costly the fighting in this area was. Each and every person buried there tells us the story about how peace was paid for.

We will never fully understand what the men endured, but we can follow their footsteps to remember their sacrifice. Then & Now moments help us to see what they saw.

Then & Now is visual exploring
