Faces of Sicily

On Sicily you will find 3 war cemeteries. Two of them in the coastal cities of Syracuse and Catania and one in the center of the island near the town of Agira.

Although many Italian units quickly surrendered to the Allied forces, the German and other Italian forces weren't planning on giving up the Island for free. The three cemeteries are now symbols of peace and a reminder of the freedom we all enjoy.

The beauty of these projects is that it is not just a Dutch effort. We work together with many local and international friends who support these projects with all their heart. So, although our foundation initiated it, together we make it an international force of liberty loving people who believe in remembering the sacrifices made in the past.

about Faces of...

What started as Faces of Agira (also known as Volti di Agira) soon became Faces of Sicily. After many hours of research our team found lots of pictures of men buried at Syracuse and Catania War Cemeteries.

In 2023, over 460 of the 490 pictures of the men on Agira Canadian War Cemetery were placed in front of the headstones. On Syracuse War Cemetery we placed 200 and on Catania War Cemetery 600.
